GRAND RAPIDS TAI CHI CENTER IS CLOSING AT THE END OF 2023. THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE SUPPORTED ME OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS!
Tai Chi (or Taiji) is short for Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan), meaning “Grand Ultimate Fist/Boxing,” which reflects its origins as a martial art. Today it is practiced for its many health benefits, which include reducing stress; improving balance, respiration, circulation, and digestion; lowering blood pressure; and increasing energy. Many medical studies have now shown that it is helpful in treating a number of serious health conditions, including arthritis, Parkinson’s, and MS. The slow-motion movements are low impact, so Tai Chi is appropriate for everyone.
There are many styles and forms, all of which provide the same benefits. But these benefits only accrue if one continues to play Tai Chi at least several times per week, preferably every day. Thus all that is required is perseverance--anyone can play Tai Chi!
Tai Chi requires no special clothing or equipment; loose, comfortable clothing is helpful, but I have had students in ties and jackets, skirts or dresses, heavy boots or bare feet, and all were able to play Tai Chi. So it is completely portable and can be done anywhere, anytime.
